Jesus Christ Superstar Auditions

AUDITION DATE:  SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2018 FROM 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM

Lyrics by Tim Rice

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

Director/Music Director: Jacqueline Skoog Hayner

Choreographer: Courtney Oliver

Synopsis:

Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of biblical Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. A rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Time Rice, the musical has no spoken dialogue and is sometimes considered a modern rock-opera. Loosely based on the Gospels, Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel, and the leadership of Rome. Special attention is played to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. The musical is unique among biblical retellings in that if focuses on both Judas’ struggle making the decision to betray Jesus and Jesus’ human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr. The show is a product of its era, permeated with 1970’s rock, gospel, folk and funk themes, modern language and colloquialisms, and high-energy dance numbers.

Roles are for teens and adults. All those auditioning should fill out an audition form in advance and bring it to auditions, paper clipped to their headshot and resume. Those auditioning should prepare two contrasting cuts of music in the style of the show-if they are auditioning for a specific role please prepare a song from the show. Be prepared for a dance call, and to read sides if necessary. Please bring sheet music for the accompanist, marked neatly with intro, start and stop of the selected music for each of the prepared songs. No CDs or tapes, please. No singing a cappella. Due to time constraints, each person auditioning may only be asked to sing one of his/her selections. Please arrive about 15 minutes prior to your vocal appointment, so that we may process your paperwork. Music cuts will be available at the theatre box office during normal box office hours. Email Terry Dean to request a copy of the song you need before you come by.
